This ‘Varx’ journal, a collaboration with traditional book-binder Leathersmith of London, pairs artisanal block-printed imagery with timeless book-binding methods and materials.
The journal’s front and back covers are restrained, clad as they are in plain, beige linen. A Rutland Grain leather 1/4 bound spine in muted green offers a pleasing colour and feel contrast.
Open the journal and the endpapers blaze. A detail from one of our oldest designs - ‘Varx’ (the phonetic spelling of ‘fox’, uttered by a true native of south-west England) - meets the eye. A fox observes us, part hidden by the leaves of Digitalis purpurea, its finely wrought head framed by floating feathers - remnants of a recent meal.
On the inside page, celebrating the collaboration and alongside Leathersmith of London’s signature, is our emblem - an earthbound and celestial plough. At the foot of the page is a lovely nod to the incorporated Bonfield design.
There are 192 glorious plain pages to fill, each one gilt edged and in 100gsm Munkin Cream paper stock. A ribbon marker is also present.
The journal is wrapped in Leathersmith branded tissue paper and housed in a smart and robust, pale green gift box.
The journal itself measures 25cm by 17.5cm. It is handmade in England.
