| ‘MISTRESS PIECE’ - Pingle Bag VI |
This bag’s name, ‘Mistress Piece’, relates to a field once frequented by the ‘mistress’ or lady of the estate. It would likely have been an idyllic, tranquil plot such as an ancient hay meadow - somewhere she loved to wander and wonder.
The face of the bag is mainly constructed from a lovely, pale hemp. Original stencilling, gently faded, depicts a horseshoe and the year 1904, suggesting the textile was woven at the turn of the century. A tobacco-toned, herringbone patch provides both colour and textural contrast. More original stencilling, in elegant cursive, is partly obscured by a further patch with rustic stitches. Our block-printed motif - an earthbound and celestial plough within a double border - sits proudly to the right.
The bag’s carefully considered rear patchwork hints at geometric abstraction, and is punctuated by stencilled letters, a flourish and an original cross-stitched mend.
As with all our ‘Pingle Bags’, we’ve furnished it with an apt, field-found relic; in this case, an early medieval zoomorphic brooch. We like to imagine it once adorned the mistress’ collar, perhaps coming loose as she bent to pick flowers, lost in reverie.
Other features include a robust, antiqued brass zip; Irish linen lining in brown and blue stripes; an internal patch pocket; and an adjustable leather strap - repurposed from an old belt - which we’ve conditioned with a traditional blend of wax, tallow, and oil.
