| ‘SENTRY FIELD’ - Pingle Bag VII |
The first part of this bag’s name, ‘Sentry’, is a corruption of ‘sanctuary’ - traditionally denoting a field adjoining a churchyard.
The bag’s face is composed of C19th hemp remnants in gently contrasting tones. Ornamentation is reserved for a single corner panel and an expressive overlaying patch. The panel features an original, stencilled ‘1908’ alongside a naively rendered oak branch, while the patch bears our signature block-printed mark: an earthbound and celestial plough within a double border.
The reverse is a minimalist patchwork of natural hues and textures - a quiet study in geometric abstraction.
Like all our ‘Pingle Bags’, the piece carries a tangible fragment of history: in this instance, an ancient, lead pilgrim’s badge found in the soil, featuring a delicate cross and pellets motif. It is carefully stitched to the bag’s body.
Other features include a robust, antiqued brass zip; Irish linen lining in brown and blue stripes; an internal patch pocket; and an adjustable leather strap, repurposed from two British Army Pattern belts still with their original brass hardware. The strap has been revived with a traditional blend of wax, tallow, and oil.
