Offered for sale is this elegant Napoleon III (circa 1880) slipper chair, covered in our ‘Lyme Bay’ hand-printed linen - conceived by artist Cameron Short as a celebration of the local seascape. This striking design, scaled up from the original block print, is in a lustrous, inky Midnight blue. Although clearly a geometric design, the part played by the human hand (in its creation) is happily in evidence; the beauty and character of the artist’s original mark-making (over 55,000 individual nicks of the v gouge!) is plain to see.

The chair has been upholstered with a genuine love for traditional process. Its pad, requiring restoration and refinement, has been capped, and the edge painstakingly hand-stitched. Its original horsehair stuffing has been carded and reused - authenticity and sustainability being front of mind. The piece has received a calico covering before being clothed in our artisanal linen. As you’d expect, the chair has the satisfying firmness only horsehair can give, and is extremely comfortable.

This period piece has its original ceramic castors and brass castor rings. Its front legs are turned and ebonised; all show-wood has been beeswaxed for a pleasing gleam. The tops of the legs are neatly piped, as are the sides and the top edge of the chair’s back. The fine zig-zag element in Cameron’s design - running horizontally across the top 1/3 of the chair’s inside back - provides a magnetic focal point for the eye; and matches up on both sides and outside back.

The chair’s dimensions are - Width: 50cm (seat) 43cm (back) Height: 37cm (seat) 83cm (back) Depth: 39cm (seat) 56cm (front to back)

Artist - Cameron Short in collaboration with traditional upholsterers Thomas Evans and Harriet Page.
