* Wingback armchair, built in late Georgian England (circa 1780)* Stripped and expertly restored from the frame up using methods and materials appropriate to the chair’s age* Original horsehair was removed, washed and re-teased using an antique carding machine* Layers of organic material - cotton webbing, hessian, original and new horsehair, linen scrim, wool wadding, calico and antique hemp - were meticulously hand-stitched using linen twine* Covered in a robust antique French hemp - ‘chanvre’ - woven in the 1800s* Hemp was plant-dyed using madder and alkanet, resulting in the perfect, pale pink. The cloth is beautifully striated - evidence of it being dipped multiple times* Cured chanvre was block-printed in our ‘After Albert’ pattern - a diamond design with a quirk. The print’s subtle irregularities, perfectly imperfect, show the work of the human hand* All diamonds are a mid-grey save for one - the black diamond, the hero of the piece, with lovely linear detailing* Edges were deftly piped in unprinted chanvre* Feather and down cushion follows the chair’s lines neatly, providing good support* Chair legs and stretchers are mahogany - simple, square and typical of the period* All show-wood was gently cleaned and beeswaxed - care was taken to retain its historic patina* Original brown ceramic castors* Dimensions - Width (back): 70cm, Width (seat): 53cm, Width (widest point): 80cm, Height (back): 106cm, Height (seat with cushion): 57cm, Depth (seat): 58cm, Depth (chair): 66cm* We ship worldwide
