This bag is constructed from antique hemp, circa C19th. The front, side and bottom panels are all light brown with lovely, subtle irregularities - the back panel provides contrast, being darker and more tobacco in colour. In place of a flap, the piece has a heavy, antiqued brass zip closure.
A block-printed image sits centrally on the front panel, neatly and pleasingly recessed, showing Beulah Dye’s lost thimble. Printed on chalky antique linen, the image really punches out. The paler textile also provides contrast to the bag’s main body. Baste stitching acts as a kind of primitive framing device, and the recessed thimble is accompanied on either side by two charming original patched mends; the very definition of perfect imperfection. Original stencilled type, black and Gothic in style, occupies the lower section of the front panel.
As already touched upon, the bag’s rear panel is plain save for a delightful original mend, just above centre. Off-white linen was used, and rustic baste stitching is in evidence.
The bag is lined in striped linen, specially commissioned for this project and woven in Wexford, Ireland. Contrasting berry-coloured stripes, chosen by us, complement the bag’s natural tones beautifully. The interior features an internal patch pocket for any small, treasured items. The story of Beulah’s lost thimble, concocted by Cameron and tapped out on an old typewriter, is pinned to the inside of the bag.
The bag’s elegant, antique leather strap - repurposed from equestrian tack - comes with its original brass buckle and is adjustable. Leatherwork was sourced, restored and expertly hand-stitched using waxed linen thread by the wonderful @ragofcolts.
Finally, for protection and to give the desired sculptural feel, the bag was gently brushed with traditional rabbit skin glue.
Each ‘Lost Bag’ is unique.
