The venue for our 1 day courses is 'Bonfield', our beautiful block-printing workshop in the village of Thorncombe, West Dorset. This year (2019), we will be running our highly popular single image workshops (good for beginners) and two intensive repeat pattern workshops.
All 1 day courses are taught by Cameron Short, with Janet Tristram providing additional tutoring (both are professional block-printers as well as being husband and wife!). The aim is to share the fundamental principles of block-printing in a warm, friendly environment, and for each student to take away their very own block print(s) on archival printmaking paper. There will be a maximum of four places on each single image workshop, and a maximum of three on both repeat pattern workshops. These small numbers ensure students get the teacher's full attention and, ultimately, more out of the courses. Due to safety issues, we're afraid we cannot accept students under the age of 16.
Materials-wise, we provide almost everything you'll need - all we ask is that you bring a clean apron and buckets of enthusiasm. Importantly, we also ask you to have a rough idea of simple imagery (you won't have time to carve anything too complex) to fit a small block - approx 20cm x 15cm (almost A5).
A delicious, home-cooked lunch is provided (vegetarian) as well as tea and biscuits throughout the day.
Because we have a lot to get through - design, transfer of image, carving, inking and printing - we have to stick pretty rigidly to a schedule, set out below.
9:30am - Brief intro with tea/coffee.
10:00am - Drawing/designing image to fit on an A5-sized linoleum block.
10:45am - Transfer image to block.
11:00am - Carve image using V-Gouge, Scoop and Knife.
1:00pm - Lunch.
1:30pm - Continue carving block.
3:00pm - Preparation of ink and inking up (due to time constraint, we will be using black ink only).
3:30pm - Printing image on press.
5:30pm - Workshop ends (our ‘repeat pattern’ workshops will end approximately 1 hour later at 6:30pm).
Obviously, you will be able to take your carved block and original block print(s) home with you - hopefully for framing! If you are interested, we urge you to contact us without too much delay; the courses are very popular.
If you are coming from London by train, a 10.00am start is possible.
