Made from robust, antique linen - circa C19th - this two-tone bag with a front flap has been partly Kakishibu hand-dyed (a traditional Japanese dyeing process using persimmon tannin) to achieve a rich, brown colour.
On the front flap, block-printed in black, is an image and text. The image shows drover Silas Bone’s lost clay pipe; its bowl fashioned, as they sometimes were, in the shape of a man’s head. The text reads: ‘he trod heavily thereafter’.
Beneath the flap, on the front of the bag, is more block-printed text in the style of dissipating pipe smoke. It reads: Lost by Silas Bone, drover, 1812’. The reverse and side panels, made from antique French hemp, have echoes of original, stencilled text in black.
The bag is part lined in Kakishibu dyed, C19th French linen. It features original hand-stitched initials in red which read: BS (Bone Silas!). Striped Irish linen provides the rest of the lining, and the story of Silas’ lost pipe, hand-written by the artist on a piece of pale blue shot silk, is hand-sewn into the bag.
The bag’s generous, antique leather strap - repurposed from equestrian tack - comes with its original buckle and housing, and is adjustable. Two antique leather straps are also hand-stitched to the front flap; they hang loose to add weight and balance. Leatherwork was sourced, restored and expertly hand-stitched using waxed linen thread by the wonderful Caroline Strecker @ragofcolts.
Finally, for protection and to give the desired sculptural feel, the bag was gently brushed with traditional rabbit skin glue.
