Dating from around 1880, this exquisite armchair is dressed in one of our oldest and best-loved hand-printed linens - ‘Ode to the Ash’ by Cameron Short. The colour is a lustrous, inky Midnight blue. The design, celebrating the ash tree or ‘Venus of the Woods’, is a mixture of British folklore and social history - with a dash of magic.

The chair’s beauty, however, is more than just skin deep. It has been upholstered from the frame up, with deftness and a genuine regard for traditional processes, techniques and materials.

Unsurprisingly, the chair is firm and very comfortable. It has new webbing in the back and seat, new lashed springs, and its various layers of traditional, organic material have been meticulously hand-stitched; as have its edges, which are wonderfully sharp. The chair’s front legs are turned and ebonised, and all show-wood has been revived with beeswax for a pleasing gleam.

The chair’s dimensions are - Width: 70cm (front of seat) 52cm (between arms) 60cm (back) Height: 37cm (seat) 92cm (back) Depth: 56cm (seat) 59cm (front to back)

Artist - Cameron Short in collaboration with traditional upholsterer, Thomas Evans.
